Five cocoon-like structures are placed paralle to the edge of the site, facing the southeast, to act as landmark of the new museum. This siting of the museum offers the optimal view of Cariro, the pyramids and the nile basin, leaving the museum highly exposed, imparting with impressive impact on the profile of the ridge.
The underbelly of the cocoons penetrates the roof of the exhibitions; and daylight filters down through the tectonic cracks, bathing the large exhibition hall in a vivid natural light. The display itineraries fluently guides the visitor through both open and closes spaces, indoor and outdoors, frequently pausing to give the visitor an opprtunaty to contemplate and prepare for more. As you progress, glimpses of things to come lure the visitor onwards. The exhibition space provides the visitors with an opportunity to find pleasure in discovery, to focus on a certain route or display, but also to navigate easily and freely between routes.
This project intens to integrate exhibition and architecture with the site itself, gently forcing the visitor to experience the whole context as an united part of the museum. The site is treated as a number of tectonic plates, which shifts individually, horisontally and vertically; creating cracs and folds in the surface of the plateau. These cracks lead visitors to and from the museum while providing shade and soothing coolness with a flow similar to that of Siena where steep alleys radiate from Piazza del Campo. The cracks, the "promenade architecturale", are treated as if each one was an oasis, with greenery and fountains, canopies and water bassins, whereas the tectonic plates house the various park areas and outdoor sculptures.
Visiting the museum will be a satisfying, versatile, breathtaking and constantly fluctuating experience. The exhibitions, the spatial qualities and the flow of visitors, create the ideal settings for the Grand Egyptian Museum. This proposal aims to create a museum, with a strong global appeal, that interacts directly between the local communities, the visitors, the researchers, the architecture and the displayed artefacts.
The cocoons, which will be the focal point for the visitors upon ascending the site, house all study and research facilities: the laboratories, the libraries, the conference, administration, and all supporting activities. These functions will be in close contact to the public, will have a grand view, and will be effectively connected to the exhibition areas and the storage underneath. During the span of the day, the 5 cocoons undergo a metamorposis, from being highly textural organic forms, into being a sculpture of light and movement at night. The museum itself is a container, not a monument. Thus it is placed partly underground in a precise cut into the plateau. This will impart a very contemplative and complete experience of the exhibition and displays, and furthermore provide the exihition areas with a natural coolness. The entrance to the exhibition is placed off-centre between the two largest cocoons, where the visitors are led down into the reception and exhibition area.
